NEED TO KNOW
What Are Your Brakes Telling You?
Brakes give warning before they fail. Match what you are hearing or feeling and book accordingly, because most of these get worse quickly.
- Squealing when you brake — pads, book now
- Grinding metal on metal — stop driving, call us
- Pedal vibrates under braking — warped rotors
- Pedal feels soft or sinks — fluid or a leak
- Car pulls to one side braking — caliper
- No symptoms, just due — full inspection

WHY MEASUREMENTS MATTER
Worn Is a Number Not an Opinion
Pads and rotors have manufacturer minimum thicknesses, and whether a part needs replacing is a measurement against that figure, not a judgement call. A shop that tells you brakes are worn without showing you a number is asking you to take their word for it.
We measure every pad and rotor and give you the readings alongside the minimum spec, so you can see for yourself how much life is left. If the fronts need doing and the rears have another season in them, we do the fronts. Several of our regulars came to us after being quoted a full brake job on parts that were barely half worn.
Aftercare
Bedding In New Brakes
New pads and rotors need bedding in, which means transferring an even layer of pad material onto the rotor face. We do the initial bedding before you leave, but the first 200 kilometres matter. Follow the 3 rules below or you end up with uneven deposits, which is what most pedal vibration actually is.
01
FIRST 200KM
Brake gently and early. No hard stops from speed while the pads seat.
02
DON'T HOLD
Avoid sitting on the pedal at a light with hot brakes. It prints the pad onto the rotor.
03
NOISE
Light noise in the first week is normal. Grinding or vibration is not. Bring it back.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD BRAKES BE INSPECTED?
Once a year for most drivers, or at every seasonal tire swap since the wheels are already off. City driving in the GTA wears pads faster than highway driving, so stop and go commuters should check more often. Any new noise or change in pedal feel means get it looked at now rather than at the next service.
HOW LONG DO BRAKE PADS LAST?
Typically 40,000 to 70,000 kilometres, but it varies enormously with driving style and where you drive. Heavy city traffic and hilly routes wear pads much faster. Rear pads on most modern cars last considerably longer than fronts, which is why a full 4 wheel job is often unnecessary.
DO ROTORS HAVE TO BE REPLACED WITH PADS?
Not always. If the rotors are above minimum thickness and the surface is clean and flat, new pads on existing rotors is perfectly fine. Rotors that are below spec, deeply scored or warped do need replacing, and we show you the measurement rather than just telling you.
WHAT DOES THE GRINDING NOISE MEAN?
Usually that the pad material is gone and metal is contacting the rotor. At that point you are damaging the rotor with every stop and your stopping distance is compromised. Stop driving it and call us. This is the one brake symptom that should not wait until the weekend.
WHY DOES MY BRAKE PEDAL VIBRATE?
Almost always uneven pad material deposited on the rotor face, which people call warping. It comes from hard braking on new pads before they bed in, or sitting on the pedal with hot brakes. Depending on severity it is fixed by resurfacing or replacing the rotors.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD BRAKE FLUID BE CHANGED?
Every 2 to 3 years for most vehicles. Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air over time, which lowers its boiling point and makes the pedal feel soft under repeated heavy braking. It is a cheap service that most drivers skip entirely.
